PURC Drives Utility Improvements Through Infrastructure Upgrades in Central Region and Service Monitoring in the North

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has intensified its oversight of utility providers across Ghana, initiating significant infrastructure repairs in the Central Region and conducting service quality assessments in the Northern Region. These interventions are part of a broader mandate to ensure that recent tariff adjustments translate into tangible improvements for consumers. The commission is currently prioritizing the stability of electricity and water supplies while holding utility companies accountable for the investments made into their distribution networks.

In the Central Region, the PURC, in collaboration with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has successfully replaced 10 damaged and overloaded transformers. This GH₵550,000 initiative directly addresses the grievances of approximately 61,004 customers who have endured prolonged power outages ranging from two weeks to nearly two months. By restoring these critical components, the commission aims to stabilize the local grid and demonstrate that consumer feedback is a vital driver for utility service improvements and infrastructure maintenance.

Simultaneously, the Executive Secretary of the PURC, Dr. Shafic Suleman, led a delegation to the Northern Region to assure residents of a continued commitment to service excellence. Following a nine percent tariff adjustment earlier this year, the commission is closely monitoring utility providers to ensure that increased revenues are being reinvested into essential infrastructure. Dr. Suleman emphasized that protecting consumer interests remains the core mandate of the PURC, particularly as the region prepares for the perennial challenges of water supply reliability during the upcoming dry season.

These regional activities underscore a nationwide effort by the PURC to balance the financial sustainability of utility systems with the right of consumers to receive reliable services. As the commission continues to assess operations and infrastructure across the country, it remains focused on ensuring that utility providers meet established benchmarks for quality. The ongoing monitoring of investments is expected to address long-standing challenges in both power distribution and water production, fostering a more resilient utility sector for all Ghanaians under the current administration.
