Ministry of Communication gives 2,000 laptops to KNUST for coding project

The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations has delivered 2,000 additional laptops to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) as part of a significant revamp of the One Million Coders Programme. The initiative is now pivoting its focus toward level 300 and 400 students to ensure they graduate with the practical digital competencies required by the modern workforce. Announced by the Sector Minister, Samuel Nartey George, during a visit to the university, this latest presentation brings the total number of laptops supplied to KNUST to 2,500, reinforcing the institution's capacity to host large-scale digital training. Under the revised model, the programme aims to bridge the gap between academic theory and industry requirements. The curriculum is undergoing a comprehensive review involving international experts to tailor courses to current market trends, with a heavy emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced software development. This strategic shift is intended to provide final-year and penultimate-year students with an edge in a competitive job market. To support this expanded scope, the university is increasing its dedicated learning hubs from their previous count to a total of 15 across the campus. University leadership has welcomed the intervention as a vital step toward reducing youth unemployment. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Christian Agyare commended the government’s support, stating that the university is ready to execute the new training model effectively. According to Prof. Jerry Job Kponyo, equipping African youth with high-level digital skills is a critical necessity for continental development. With over 1,400 students already enrolled in the programme, the addition of new hardware and a modernized curriculum is expected to significantly enhance the digital literacy and employability of KNUST graduates.
