The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has formally challenged the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to spearhead the development of indigenous Artificial Intelligence (AI) language models. Speaking at the university, the Minister emphasized the urgent need for Ghana to create its own technological frameworks to reduce reliance on foreign AI systems that often lack the linguistic depth required for local applications. The Minister's call specifically focuses on the development of a Twi AI model as a starting point for integrating local languages into the global digital landscape. He warned that without such home-grown solutions, indigenous Ghanaian languages face a risk of technological extinction. Foreign-built AI models, while powerful, frequently fail to capture the subtle nuances, idioms, and cultural context of Ghanaian dialects, which can lead to miscommunication or the marginalization of local speakers in the digital age. Beyond linguistic preservation, the initiative aims to bridge the digital divide for specific sectors, most notably agriculture. By developing AI that understands local languages, the government intends to provide accessible, real-time solutions for Ghanaian farmers who may not be proficient in English but require technical advice and market data. Sam Nartey George also encouraged a collaborative approach, urging academic institutions like KNUST to work closely with traditional authorities to ensure the accuracy and cultural relevance of the data used to train these models. This directive aligns with broader national plans to formalize and integrate local languages into the country's technological advancements. By positioning academic institutions at the forefront of AI research, the Ministry hopes to foster a tech ecosystem that is both innovative and culturally grounded. The success of the Twi model is expected to serve as a blueprint for other Ghanaian languages, ensuring that the country's digital future remains inclusive and representative of its diverse heritage.
