Shai-Osudoku District Assembly Distributes Essential Equipment and Financial Support to 58 Persons with Disabilities

The Shai-Osudoku District Assembly in the Greater Accra Region has taken significant steps to enhance the livelihoods of its vulnerable residents by distributing essential tools and financial aid to 58 persons with disabilities (PWDs). This initiative, spearheaded by the assembly’s Social Welfare and Community Development Department, is part of a broader government strategy to provide PWDs with the resources necessary for economic independence and improved living standards. The support package included a wide range of items, such as deep freezers, refrigerators, sewing machines, wheelchairs, and direct cash disbursements.

During the distribution ceremony, District Chief Executive (DCE) Ignatius Godfred Dordoe, in a message delivered by Presiding Member Nicholas Owen Korletey, issued a stern warning to the beneficiaries against the sale of the donated items. He emphasized that the equipment was intended to serve as a foundation for sustainable income generation and should be used responsibly to benefit the recipients and their families. The assembly underscored its commitment to ensuring that these resources are not wasted but rather utilized to foster self-reliance within the community.

To ensure the success of the program, the District Social Welfare Director, Theresa Kutu, announced that the assembly would not merely drop off the items and leave. Instead, a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation plan has been put in place. This will involve regular follow-up visits to provide beneficiaries with technical advice and ongoing support, ensuring that the equipment remains in good condition and is being used effectively. Maxwell Tettey, one of the beneficiaries who received a laptop, expressed profound gratitude for the gesture, noting that it would significantly enhance his productivity.

In addition to the physical and financial support, the event integrated essential health services to provide a holistic support system for the attendees. Officials from the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) were present to educate PWDs on updated regulations and to facilitate the immediate renewal and issuance of health insurance cards. This integrated approach highlights the assembly’s dedication to addressing both the economic and health-related challenges faced by persons with disabilities, ensuring they remain active and healthy participants in the district's development.
