Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah reports 30% drop in KATH maternal deaths

Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, the Deputy Minister of Health, informed the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that targeted healthcare interventions have resulted in a 30 per cent reduction in maternal deaths at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). Speaking during a hearing on the ministry's performance, the Deputy Minister attributed this improvement to the implementation of strategic initiatives, including mentorship programs for medical officers and the establishment of virtual labour rooms that allow specialists to provide real-time guidance during deliveries. Despite the success at KATH, Dr. Ayensu-Danquah presented data showing a slight increase in maternal mortality at the national level. By mid-2026, Ghana recorded 445 maternal deaths, up from 419 recorded during the same period in 2025. She identified several systemic challenges contributing to these figures, including delays in reaching emergency care, inadequate facilities in certain regions, and the failure to promptly identify high-risk pregnancies. The Ministry is currently advocating for a dedicated budget and the expansion of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) coverage to include critical emergency care for pregnant women to bridge these gaps. During her testimony, Dr. Ayensu-Danquah also issued a public health warning regarding the consumption of white clay, locally known as "ayilo," and ice by pregnant women. She explained that these unusual cravings often signify severe anaemia, a condition that significantly increases the risk of haemorrhage and other life-threatening complications during childbirth. She emphasized that early detection and treatment of anaemia at the primary healthcare level are essential components of the government's strategy to reduce mortality rates and reach international health targets by 2030. In response to the Ministry's report, members of the Public Accounts Committee acknowledged the gravity of the situation and pledged to support the health sector in upcoming national budget discussions. The committee intends to engage with the Finance Minister to secure the necessary funding for maternal health infrastructure and emergency services. This legislative support is seen as a vital step toward sustaining the progress made at facilities like KATH and reversing the recent upward trend in national maternal mortality statistics.
