Stonebwoy's BHIM Band Champions Professional Recognition for Backing Vocalists and Instrumentalists in Ghana's Music Industry

The BHIM Band, the official ensemble for award-winning dancehall artist Stonebwoy, has launched a passionate appeal for the Ghanaian music industry to grant greater recognition to backing vocalists, instrumentalists, and live bands. Speaking during an interview on JoyNews' E Vibes Musical Band Series, the group emphasized that these musicians play an indispensable role in the creation of hit records and the success of live performances, yet they often remain in the shadows when it comes to formal accolades and industry appreciation. The band argues that acknowledging these contributions is essential for the growth of the music ecosystem.

During the discussion, band members highlighted a significant gap in the current awards landscape in Ghana. Backing vocalist SK lamented the lack of opportunities and formal credit for talented singers who provide the essential layers to the nation’s favorite songs. Ayeyi, another member of the band, pointed out a peculiar contradiction: while backing vocalists are often highly visible during live shows and music videos, the industry's reward systems tend to prioritize engineers and directors, frequently bypassing the vocalists and musicians who bring the sound to life on stage and in the studio.

The BHIM Band's advocacy centers on the creation of dedicated award categories specifically designed to honor backing vocalists and instrumentalists. By establishing these honors, the band believes the industry can foster a more inclusive environment that rewards all contributors to the creative process. Such recognition, they argue, would not only validate the hard work of current professionals but also serve as a powerful incentive for aspiring musicians to pursue specialized roles, ensuring the continued technical and artistic quality of Ghana’s music scene.

As live music gains increasing prominence in Ghana’s entertainment landscape, the call from the BHIM Band adds to a growing conversation about the sustainability and professionalization of the sector. The group, celebrated for its high-energy performances and musical versatility, remains a vocal proponent for acknowledging every professional involved in the music production value chain. Their appeal serves as a reminder that the brilliance of a solo artist is often bolstered by the collective talent of a dedicated team of musicians whose contributions deserve to be celebrated on the national stage.
