Residents of Tema Community 25 have issued a two-week ultimatum to Ghana Water Limited (GWL) to restore regular water supply to their neighborhood. The frustrated inhabitants warned they will occupy and sleep at the utility company's head office if their demands are not met within the timeframe. For several years, the community has endured persistent water shortages, forcing families to seek alternative and more expensive sources for their daily needs.
The situation has reached a breaking point as residents describe the severe financial and logistical burden of the crisis. Households are currently reliant on private water tankers and boreholes, which come at a significant premium. Many community members reported spending large sums of money monthly on these private services while simultaneously receiving bills from GWL for water that does not flow through their taps. Beyond the financial impact, there are growing concerns regarding fire safety, as the lack of a reliable water supply leaves the community vulnerable in the event of an emergency.
Community leaders expressed deep disappointment with previous interactions with GWL, noting that past assurances have failed to result in any lasting solutions. Despite multiple complaints and formal engagements with the utility provider, the taps remain dry. Residents highlighted the unresponsiveness of the company's billing department, which they claim continues to issue charges that do not reflect the reality of service delivery on the ground.
The two-week deadline serves as a final warning to both the utility provider and the government for urgent intervention. If the supply is not restored by the end of the period, the residents plan to stage a protest at the GWL head office to demonstrate the severity of their plight. They are calling for a comprehensive fix to the infrastructure issues causing the shortage to ensure a stable and reliable supply for the growing population of Tema Community 25.
