TrustGH Flags 6,000 Phone Numbers for Fraud as TikTok Emerges as Leading Platform for Scams

TrustGH, a dedicated scam verification platform in Ghana, has identified and flagged more than 6,000 telephone numbers directly linked to suspected fraudulent activities. According to recent data released by the platform, a staggering 50 percent of these reported scams originated on TikTok, highlighting the popular video-sharing app as a primary hunting ground for digital fraudsters. The surge in reported cases underscores an urgent need for heightened vigilance among mobile phone users, particularly those who frequently utilize mobile financial services and social media platforms.
The modus operandi for these criminals largely revolves around sophisticated social engineering tactics designed to exploit human psychology. Fraudsters frequently impersonate government officials, utility company representatives, or staff from reputable financial institutions to manipulate victims into revealing sensitive information or authorizing payments. These deceptive practices are most commonly aimed at facilitating unauthorized Mobile Money (MoMo) transactions. While TikTok remains the most prevalent source for these encounters, TrustGH noted that SMS and WhatsApp remain significant channels used by bad actors to initiate contact and build false trust with their targets.
In response to this growing threat, TrustGH is working in close coordination with the Ghana Police Service and the Cybersecurity Authority to track and mitigate the impact of these organized scams. This multi-agency approach aims to streamline the reporting process and ensure that flagged numbers are investigated and neutralized before they can claim more victims. By pooling resources and sharing data across institutions, these organizations hope to create a more robust defensive layer for the country's digital economy, which has become increasingly vulnerable to cybercrime syndicates.
As digital fraud becomes more prevalent and complex, TrustGH is urging the public to remain proactive in verifying any suspicious communications they receive. Citizens are encouraged to utilize the TrustGH platform to report suspicious phone numbers and check the status of unknown contacts before engaging in any financial transactions. The platform’s findings serve as a critical reminder that while social media and mobile connectivity offer immense benefits, they also require users to adopt a culture of security and skepticism to protect their personal and financial assets from increasingly bold digital predators.
