TUTAG Sustains Industrial Action Over Post-Retirement Contracts and Service Scheme Disparity

The Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG) has clarified the ongoing status of its industrial action, emphasizing that while progress has been made on certain financial fronts, critical grievances remain unaddressed. Speaking at a press conference, TUTAG's National President, Professor Deodat E. Adenutsi, announced that the association has pivoted its focus away from the non-payment of Book and Research Allowances, acknowledging that the government has finally initiated the payment process for these specific funds. However, the strike continues as the association seeks resolution for deeper structural and welfare issues.
The crux of the current dispute centers on the non-payment of post-retirement contracts and what the association describes as unilateral alterations to the agreed-upon scheme of service. Professor Adenutsi specifically highlighted that these administrative changes have disproportionately affected librarians within the technical university system, creating a disparity in professional standing and benefits. Despite extensive negotiations and repeated engagements with various government bodies and relevant entities, TUTAG maintains that tangible solutions have remained elusive, leaving the association with no choice but to continue its strike.
Under the current directive, TUTAG members have been instructed to withdraw specific services, primarily focusing on classroom teaching and the supervision of students. This targeted approach means that while core academic delivery is suspended, members are expected to continue performing other professional duties as outlined by the association’s leadership. This strategy is designed to exert maximum pressure on the government to honor financial commitments to retired academic staff and finalize a fair scheme of service without completely abandoning all institutional responsibilities.
As the industrial action persists, the academic calendar for technical universities across the country faces increasing disruption. The association’s leadership has reiterated that the strike will only be called off once a clear, verifiable, and satisfactory roadmap for addressing the librarian service scheme and post-retirement arrears is established. The government’s responsiveness in the coming days will be pivotal in determining when full academic activities will resume for students and faculty alike.
