US-Africa Nuclear Energy Summit: Experts Urge Reform of TVET Systems to Drive Continental Development

Experts and policymakers at the 2026 US-Africa Nuclear Energy Summit (USANES) in Accra have identified social stigma, outdated curricula, and a lack of accountability as primary barriers hindering Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) across Africa. During a high-level panel discussion, participants emphasized that without a fundamental shift in how vocational education is perceived and delivered, the continent will struggle to develop the skilled workforce necessary for sophisticated industries, including the emerging nuclear power sector. The summit highlighted that TVET must no longer be viewed as a fallback for low-achieving students but as a cornerstone of national economic strategy.

Dr. Eric Kofi Adzroe, Ghana’s Director-General of TVET, outlined the government's proactive measures to address these systemic issues during the session. He noted that Ghana is currently implementing a curriculum focused heavily on practical skills and has established a dedicated TVET fund to ensure sustainable financing. According to Dr. Adzroe, these reforms are designed to align educational outcomes with modern market demands, ensuring that graduates possess the technical competencies required for high-stakes roles in infrastructure and energy. The introduction of such a governance structure aims to provide the necessary support and incentives to attract the youth into vocational pathways.

The discussions concluded with a consensus that integrating TVET into the broader framework of national infrastructure development is essential for long-term growth. Panellists called for a collaborative approach between governments and private sector stakeholders to enhance career incentives and improve the overall perception of vocational careers. As Africa prepares for complex technological transitions, such as the adoption of nuclear energy, the revitalization of TVET systems is seen as an indispensable step toward achieving self-sufficiency and driving sustainable job creation for the continent’s growing population.
