The University Teachers Association of Ghana at the University of Ghana (UTAG-UG) has expressed optimism that its members will receive their long-awaited book and research allowances by October 23. This projection follows the resolution of several administrative and technical bottlenecks that had previously stalled the disbursement process for the current academic year, providing relief to faculty members at the institution. UTAG-UG President, Jerry Joe Harrison, confirmed that the processing delays were primarily attributed to technical complications within the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS). Additionally, a previous strike by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) had further disrupted the administrative workflow necessary for processing these specific payments. With the GAUA industrial action resolved and the GIFMIS technical issues addressed, the backlog of documentation is now being cleared. According to Professor Harrison, the association has completed the critical stages of processing and validating all essential documents required for the release of the funds. The branch is now waiting for the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department to effect the final payment. The receipt of these allowances is considered vital for faculty members, as the funds are dedicated to supporting academic research and the procurement of necessary teaching materials for the semester.
