The University of Ghana branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UG) has issued a formal notice to suspend all teaching and related services effective October 19, 2026. This decision follows the government’s failure to disburse the overdue 2026 Book and Research Allowances (BRA). The association has set a final deadline of October 16 for the government to process these payments, warning that a total disruption of academic work will follow if the funds are not received.
In a formal notification submitted to the National Labour Commission (NLC), UTAG-UG expressed profound frustration over the persistent delays in settling these statutory allowances. The leadership of the association noted that the current situation is a clear violation of the 2020 Memorandum of Agreement established between the government and university teachers. They emphasized that the Book and Research Allowance is a critical component of their conditions of service, intended to support academic inquiry and the production of scholarly work essential for the university’s mission.
The impending strike action threatens to paralyze academic activities at the University of Ghana, potentially affecting lecture schedules and administrative duties. The association remains firm that the suspension of services will only be averted if the government demonstrates commitment by meeting the October 16 deadline. As students and faculty await a resolution, the union maintains that the government must honor its financial obligations to ensure the stability of the higher education sector and the welfare of academic staff.
