During a recent visit to the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture on December 23, 2025, Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang expressed grave concerns regarding the pollution of Ghana’s seas, attributing it to illegal mining activities (galamsey) and the dumping of plastic waste. She underscored the detrimental impact these actions have on marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of fisherfolk. The Vice President criticized the irresponsible disposal of toxic materials, urging for immediate measures to safeguard the waters. Furthermore, she advocated for enhanced conditions for fisherfolk, drawing attention to the respect afforded to fishing professions in other countries and calling for similar recognition in Ghana.
