Twenty selected soccer players from across the Volta Region have officially commenced a rigorous camping exercise in Akatsi to prepare for the upcoming Inter-Regional Basic Schools Sports Festival. This intensive training program, which draws talent from 15 different districts, is designed to hone the skills of the region's top young athletes before they represent their communities on the national stage. The initiative underscores the region's commitment to youth sports development and its ambition to secure top honors at the forthcoming tournament.
The squad was finalized following a thorough screening process aimed at identifying the most promising talent in the region. Among the standout players selected for the camp are Ametefe Erasmus and Korve Cephas, who will undergo specialized coaching to ensure the team is competitive at the highest level. The training effort is not limited to boys' soccer; the Volta Region is also preparing its girls’ soccer, volleyball, and athletics teams, with comprehensive training schedules in place for each discipline to ensure a well-rounded and formidable regional contingent.
Financial and community support has been a cornerstone of this preparation. The Volta Regional Physical Education Coordinator, Mr. Roger Tey, expressed his profound gratitude to local benefactors for their contributions. A significant highlight was a GHS 15,000 donation from the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Bernard Ahiafor, which has been essential in covering the logistical costs of the camp. These funds ensure that the young athletes have the necessary resources and environment to focus entirely on their athletic development.
Beyond technical skills, the training program emphasizes the importance of discipline and the long-term nurturing of local talent. Mr. Tey noted that the initiative seeks to inspire young athletes to see sports as a viable path for personal growth and community pride. As the teams continue their final preparations in Akatsi, there is a strong sense of optimism among officials and coaches that the Volta Region will deliver a standout performance across all sporting categories at the Inter-Regional festival.
