The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) secured a vital three points on the road, defeating Zimbabwe 2-1 in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier. The match, held in Harare, saw the Leopards assert their dominance early on, led by a standout performance from Yoane Wissa. Wissa was the central architect of the victory, finding the back of the net himself before turning provider to ensure his side remained in a strong position within their qualifying group.
The deadlock was broken in the 30th minute following a significant lapse in concentration from the Zimbabwean defense. A mishap by goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze gifted a golden opportunity to Wissa, who clinicaly converted the opening goal to put the visitors ahead. Not content with just the opener, the striker continued to threaten the Warriors' backline throughout the first half. His influence culminated in a crucial assist for the DRC's second goal, effectively doubling the lead and putting the game out of reach for the hosts.
Zimbabwe, playing in front of their home crowd, struggled to find their rhythm after the initial setback caused by the goalkeeping error. While the Warriors managed to find a response during the match, the defensive lapses proved too costly to overcome. The 2-1 result leaves Zimbabwe with significant work to do in their upcoming fixtures if they hope to secure a spot in the 2027 tournament, while the DRC moves forward with renewed confidence in their qualifying campaign.
As the qualifiers progress, the focus for the DRC will be on maintaining this momentum and the clinical form shown by their attacking stars. For Zimbabwe, the technical team will likely look to address the defensive coordination issues that were exposed during this encounter in Harare. With the road to the 2027 AFCON still unfolding, this away win serves as a major boost for the Leopards as they seek to cement their place among Africa's elite footballing nations.
