Zambia's Tech Minister Leads Business Delegation to Ghana, Hails Africa-to-Africa Investment Drive

Sir Sam Jonah urges African nations to build local AI capacity

Sir Sam Jonah, the Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast and a prominent businessman, has issued a strong call for African nations to transition from being mere consumers of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to becoming active builders of the technology. Speaking at the 2026 Methodist University Ghana (MUG) International Conference, Jonah emphasized that the continent must prioritize developing local technical capacity to address its unique challenges rather than relying solely on imported digital solutions. He warned that a failure to innovate locally could trap the continent in a cycle of dependency similar to previous industrial eras. Jonah drew a sharp comparison between the current digital landscape and Africa’s historical experiences with the mining sector. He cautioned that if the continent continues to import AI technologies without developing its own, it risks repeating the economic mistakes seen in gold production, where the majority of value was extracted by external entities. He argued that a reliance on foreign technology could significantly worsen existing inequalities and expand the digital divide, leaving African economies vulnerable to external shocks and control. To illustrate Africa's potential for innovation, Jonah pointed to the success of mobile money as a prime example of the continent solving its own problems through home-grown technology. He urged policymakers and educational institutions to focus on building a robust local ecosystem that fosters technical expertise. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of mentorship and the inclusion of women in the technology sector as vital components for ensuring sustainable and equitable economic development. Beyond technological advancement, Jonah addressed the broader need for ethical leadership and moral integrity in national development. He expressed grave concern over the environmental and economic consequences of illegal mining in Ghana, calling for a shift toward leadership that prioritizes service to the people over self-interest. He concluded by asserting that without a combination of moral leadership and a commitment to indigenous innovation, Africa’s growth will continue to be hindered by external dependencies and internal mismanagement.
