The Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has mandated a comprehensive audit of all assets under her ministry to enhance management and prevent the encroachment of state lands. The directive was issued during a series of working visits to the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA) and the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), where the Minister sought to assess institutional challenges and strengthen collaboration within the sector.
During her visit to the GAEC, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings emphasized the urgent need to safeguard public property and maintain buffer zones. She expressed particular concern over public disregard for safety zones around telecommunication masts and other sensitive installations. The Minister noted that the ministry must improve its communication regarding radiation risks to ensure that the public understands the health implications of encroaching on these designated areas. She also highlighted the necessity of establishing robust legal frameworks to manage the integration of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, into nuclear operations.
Addressing advancements in biotechnology, the Minister called for greater transparency and public engagement regarding the adoption of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Ghana. She advocated for clear labeling of products to empower consumers and suggested that the National Biosafety Authority (NBA) consider designated cultivation areas to prevent the mixing of GMOs with indigenous crops. According to Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings, building public trust through education is essential, especially as the NBA has recently received court approval for several GMO crop events.
Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings concluded by pledging the ministry's continued support for scientific agencies to help them overcome funding and logistical constraints. She encouraged deeper collaboration with educational institutions to foster expertise in nuclear science and more rigorous inspection of radioactive materials. The Minister reaffirmed her confidence in the commitment of scientific personnel to drive national development through innovation and the responsible application of technology.
