Ghanaian para-athlete Zinabu Issah has made history at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, clinching a silver medal in the Women’s F57 Shot Put. This milestone achievement marks Ghana's first medal of the tournament, sparking celebrations across the nation’s sporting community. The National Sports Authority (NSA) hailed the victory as a testament to the resilience and exceptional talent of Ghana’s para-athletes, who continue to shine on the international stage. The achievement highlights the continued growth of the sport under the current sports administration in President John Mahama’s government.
In a statement following the win, NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah described the achievement as a landmark moment for Ghanaian sports. He noted that Issah’s performance continues a proud legacy that began when Ghana won its first para-athletics medal at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010. The NSA also commended Samson Deen, President of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) of Ghana and the African Paralympic Committee, for his steadfast commitment to developing para-sports, which has consistently yielded results for the nation on the global stage.
Attention now shifts to the track, where fellow para-athlete Hayford Addai is set to compete in the Men’s T47 100-meter final. Addai, who recently secured a gold medal at the Dubai World Para Athletics Grand Prix, enters the race as a strong contender for the podium. However, the competition remains stiff, with India's Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath and Dilip Mahadu Gavit identified as the primary favorites. Analysts suggest that if Addai can produce a personal best near the 11.00-second mark, he stands a significant chance of adding to Ghana's medal tally in what is expected to be one of the fastest races in the event's history.
As the Glasgow 2026 Games progress, the NSA and the broader sporting fraternity remain optimistic about Team Ghana’s prospects. The success of Zinabu Issah is expected to serve as a powerful inspiration for the remaining athletes across various disciplines. With several events still on the horizon, the nation remains hopeful that the foundation laid by the para-athletics team will lead to further podium finishes, reinforcing Ghana's growing reputation as a powerhouse in continental and global para-sports.
