Abiy Ahmed Sworn In for New Five-Year Term as Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Amid Rising Maritime Tensions

Ethiopia’s parliament has officially re-elected and sworn in Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister for a new five-year term, following a decisive victory in the June general elections. Ahmed's ruling Prosperity Party secured a dominant mandate by winning 438 out of 547 seats in the legislature. The inauguration ceremony, held on Monday, marks the formal commencement of a second term for the Prime Minister as he navigates a complex political and security landscape within the Horn of Africa.
Shortly after taking the oath of office, Prime Minister Ahmed signaled a shift toward a more assertive foreign policy by emphasizing the necessity for landlocked Ethiopia to gain direct access to the Red Sea. He characterized the demand as an essential requirement for the nation's future, despite immediate pushback from neighboring coastal states. These neighbors have countered that control over the sea remains strictly within their sovereign jurisdictions, raising regional diplomatic tensions as Ethiopia seeks to secure its maritime interests.
In addition to his regional ambitions, the Prime Minister addressed the escalating internal conflicts that continue to challenge his administration. Vowing to maintain national security, Ahmed declared the government’s readiness to counter potential rebel offensives. He specifically underscored the importance of air superiority, assuring the public that the Ethiopian military is well-equipped for both preemptive and reactive operations. He praised the bravery of the armed forces, framing their strength as the primary guarantor of the state’s stability.
As Ahmed begins this new five-year mandate, the dual focus on maritime access and military readiness suggests a period of intensified strategic maneuvering for Ethiopia. While the Prosperity Party's massive parliamentary majority provides a strong domestic platform, the administration must balance its quest for sea access with the need to prevent further internal fragmentation. The international community continues to watch closely as these developments could significantly impact the broader stability of East Africa.
