The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has urged the administration of President John Mahama to embrace public scrutiny and transparency as essential pillars of democratic governance. Speaking at the 4th Bono Regional Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards in Sunyani, Mr. Nketiah emphasized that public officials must be prepared to address legitimate inquiries regarding their policies and the management of public resources. He asserted that accountability is a vital mechanism for effective governance and should not be perceived as a political attack, but rather as a necessary duty to ensure the government remains responsive to the needs of the citizens.
Highlighting the media's indispensable role in a democracy, Mr. Nketiah called for a shift in how the government interacts with the press. He argued that for the media to effectively hold the state accountable, ministers and public officials must provide the information necessary for accurate reporting. He stressed that a government should welcome examination of its expenditures and commitments in good faith, as this process builds public trust and ensures that the administration fulfills its promises to the Ghanaian people. He further reminded journalists of their duty to prioritize factual and credible reporting, regardless of political affiliations, to serve the public interest effectively.
Beyond governance, the NDC Chairman advocated for significant improvements in the working conditions and institutional support provided to journalists. He expressed concern over the sustainability of journalism in Ghana, noting that media organizations must be sufficiently resourced to retain competent staff. By ensuring journalists can build respectable careers free from financial dependency on political or business interests, the media can better maintain its professional integrity. Mr. Nketiah specifically highlighted the need for greater focus and resources for regional journalism to ensure that local community issues are adequately reported and addressed.
In a call to action, Mr. Nketiah challenged the media to move beyond official narratives and proactively monitor ongoing government development projects to ensure value for money. He urged journalists to maintain meticulous archives and records to track public investments and hold officials to their word. This call for professional rigor was echoed by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako, who served as a guest speaker. Prof. Asare-Bediako underscored the importance of accuracy, verification, and collaboration between academia and the media to enhance the credibility of news in an era of rapid information flow.
The awards ceremony, held under the theme "Ethics, Integrity, and Impactful Journalism, Essential Ingredients for Societal Transformation," recognized several journalists for their contributions to the field. The event concluded with a shared consensus that a well-resourced, ethical, and independent media landscape is fundamental to Ghana's continued democratic progress and societal development.
