Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has announced that Ghana has successfully navigated its recent economic crisis and is now positioned for sustainable growth. Speaking at the University of Development Studies, Dr. Forson stated that the government has "turned the tide," establishing a firm foundation for what he described as an imminent "economic take-off." He emphasized that the recovery marks a transition toward long-term prosperity and a more resilient national economy under the leadership of President John Mahama.
Central to this recovery is the New Economy initiative, which the Finance Minister highlighted as the primary vehicle for addressing youth unemployment. Dr. Forson expressed concern over the persistent disconnect between the country's educational system and the job market. He characterized the current level of unemployment as unacceptable, noting the heavy emotional and financial burden on families who invest in education only to see their graduates struggle for work. The initiative aims to bridge this gap by creating sustainable livelihoods and empowering individuals capable of generating jobs.
Beyond youth employment, the New Economy program is designed to provide targeted support to farmers and small businesses. Dr. Forson stressed that systemic changes are necessary to create a more favorable economic environment for these sectors. By focusing on those capable of driving local production and entrepreneurship, the government intends to ensure that the benefits of the economic recovery reach the grassroots level and support the broader goal of national self-reliance.
While expressing optimism, the Finance Minister cautioned that maintaining macroeconomic stability is essential to safeguard the progress made so far. He reminded government leaders of their mandate to respond effectively to the national crisis and their shared responsibility for the well-being of all citizens. Dr. Forson urged a strategy of cautious advancement, ensuring that fiscal discipline remains a priority to prevent any reversal of the hard-won gains in the nation's financial standing.
