Chad and France Shift Focus to Economic Diplomacy Following 2024 Military Rift

Nearly two years after the withdrawal of French forces and a significant diplomatic rift in late 2024, Chad and France are quietly working to mend their relationship by shifting focus from military presence to economic and diplomatic cooperation. This pivot marks a strategic recalibration for both nations following Chad’s decision in November 2024 to terminate a long-standing defense cooperation agreement. The current rapprochement is being spearheaded by high-level engagements intended to stabilize a partnership once defined primarily by security interests in the Sahel region.

The transition toward a business-first relationship was recently underscored by the attendance of two Chadian ministers at a major business forum in Paris. This diplomatic outreach follows direct discussions between Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby and French President Emmanuel Macron. During these talks, both leaders emphasized the prioritization of economic partnerships as a means to sustain bilateral ties without the heavy footprint of a permanent French military base. While the overt military alliance has faded, discreet security collaborations remain in place, specifically focusing on intelligence sharing and specialized military training to address regional instability.

This rebuilding of ties occurs against a backdrop of complex security challenges emanating from conflict zones neighboring Chad. As France’s traditional influence in West and Central Africa faces increasing scrutiny, the move toward economic diplomacy represents a "quiet" approach to maintaining relevance in the region. For Chad, the focus on business investment offers a path to economic resilience while maintaining a degree of strategic autonomy. The success of this new framework will likely depend on the ability of both nations to balance their shared security concerns with the evolving political landscape of the Sahel.
