Ghana-Canada Trade Surges 56% to $752M as Government Secures $700M Petrochemical Investment

Ghana’s industrial and international trade landscape has reached a significant milestone, marked by a 56% surge in bilateral trade with Canada and the signing of a landmark $700 million agreement for new petrochemical projects. During a Canada Day reception in Accra on July 2, 2026, Canada’s High Commissioner to Ghana, Myriam Montrat, revealed that trade between the two nations reached $752 million in 2025. This growth represents a strategic shift from traditional aid-based cooperation to a robust partnership centered on trade and investment, with Canadian businesses increasingly targeting Ghana’s agribusiness, health, and climate action sectors.

To further solidify this relationship, Canada is set to host an Investment Summit later this year to encourage Ghanaian investors to explore North American opportunities. High Commissioner Montrat emphasized that the partnership is built on mutual goals, including gender equality and regional security, while positioning Ghana as a critical gateway to the 1.4 billion-strong African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) market. This sentiment was echoed by Ghana’s Minister of Energy, who noted that the evolution of the bilateral relationship toward commerce and innovation is essential for long-term sustainable growth.

On the domestic front, the government has moved to bolster the local economy through the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Authority. An MOU was recently signed with Petrochemical Holding GmbH to establish a $700 million industrial complex. This project, managed under the joint venture GreenRock Petrochemical Ghana Limited, will focus on the production of sodium cyanide and caustic soda, alongside a gold tailings recovery and environmental remediation platform. The initiative aims to reduce Ghana’s reliance on imported chemicals, serve the broader West African market, and create significant local employment while promoting sustainable industrial practices.

In tandem with these industrial expansions, the Ghana Shippers Authority is set to implement new regulatory measures to streamline trade operations. Effective August 3, 2026, a mandatory annual registration for all shippers will be enforced through the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS). Despite the new requirement, which carries a nominal fee of GH₵150, the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana has assured stakeholders that the move is a standard procedure intended to enhance industry compliance and will not disrupt the flow of trade. Collectively, these developments signal a period of intensive economic diversification and regulatory modernization for the Ghanaian business sector.
