Cyber Security Authority disputes FBI Director on cybercrime operation
•2 min read•1 source
The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) of Ghana has officially challenged claims made by the Director of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Kash Patel, concerning the leadership of a major anti-cybercrime initiative. The CSA maintains that the mission, known alternately as "Operation Cyber Hunt" or "Operation Blackout," was a Ghanaian-led effort rather than an operation commanded by external agencies. This response serves to clarify the operational hierarchy and the nature of international cooperation in recent high-profile crackdowns on digital fraud networks.
According to the CSA, the operation was orchestrated and executed by Ghanaian authorities in strict adherence to national laws and institutional frameworks. While the authority acknowledged the significant contributions of international partners, including the FBI and the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency (NCA), it emphasized that these bodies provided technical and collaborative support rather than primary direction. The rebuttal follows public assertions by FBI Director Kash Patel that suggested a more dominant role for the American agency in dismantling the cybercrime networks operating within Ghana.
The CSA’s firm stance reinforces Ghana's sovereign capacity to manage its internal security and technological landscape. By clarifying the domestic-led nature of "Operation Cyber Hunt," the authority aims to preserve the integrity of Ghanaian law enforcement and its standing with global partners. This development highlights the ongoing complexities of international security cooperation, where the balance between national jurisdiction and global law enforcement narratives must be carefully maintained to ensure effective future collaborations.
