Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has issued a stark warning regarding the Black Stars' prospects for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Speaking in an interview with 3Sports, the retired winger stated that it would take a "miracle" for the national team to secure a place in the tournament following a disastrous start to their qualifying campaign. Kingston's assessment reflects growing concern over the team's trajectory after failing to record a single point in their opening fixtures.
The Black Stars currently find themselves at the bottom of their qualifying group with zero points after two matches. Kingston highlighted that this trend is part of a longer period of underperformance, noting that the senior national team has not won an AFCON qualifying match since September 2023. This poor run of form mirrors the struggles faced during the previous qualifying cycle, raising significant fears that Ghana could miss the continent's flagship football tournament for the second consecutive time.
Kingston urged football authorities and stakeholders to adopt a more realistic view of the team's current predicament. He suggested that rather than solely focusing on the hope of qualification, the nation should address the fundamental challenges currently hindering the squad's performance. As the team prepares for upcoming fixtures against Somalia, the pressure continues to mount on the technical staff and players to stage an improbable turnaround to salvage their qualifying hopes.
