Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, a former Minister of Youth and Sports, has issued a sharp critique of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), accusing the governing body of neglecting domestic football in favor of the senior national team. Speaking on Akoma FM, Vanderpuye suggested that the GFA currently operates more like a "Black Stars Association" than a national football federation, prioritizing the interests and funding of the Black Stars while the local league and historic clubs struggle to survive.
The former minister expressed particular concern for the health of traditional powerhouses such as Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak. He argued that the GFA's singular focus on the national team has compromised the competitiveness and sustainability of the Ghana Premier League. Beyond financial disparities, Vanderpuye highlighted systemic issues within the domestic game, including reports of referee intimidation at smaller venues and a general lack of investment in youth development programs that are essential for the growth of the sport.
Vanderpuye further advocated for a radical shift in Ghana's football strategy, suggesting that the nation should move away from its preoccupation with immediate tournament success. He urged football administrators to potentially overlook qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2030 FIFA World Cup if it means focusing on structural reforms. According to Vanderpuye, a period of reconstruction is necessary to rebuild the foundations of Ghanaian football from the grassroots up, rather than constantly chasing short-term results with the senior team.
These comments come at a time of significant pressure on the GFA and the Black Stars technical team. The national team is currently struggling in their quest for AFCON 2027 qualification, having recorded consecutive losses against Ivory Coast and The Gambia in Group C. Vanderpuye’s call for a balanced ecosystem emphasizes that the success of the national team is inextricably linked to the strength of domestic clubs and the integrity of the local league environment.
