President John Dramani Mahama has detailed his administration's "Big Push" Infrastructure Programme, a $10 billion initiative designed to overhaul Ghana's physical landscape and stimulate job creation. Speaking at the 13th Financial Times Africa Summit, the President explained that the plan involves a sustained investment of $2 billion annually over the next five years. This capital injection is intended to address critical infrastructure gaps while building the foundation for long-term economic resilience.
The programme will initially prioritize the construction and rehabilitation of the nation’s road networks to improve connectivity and facilitate trade. Following the initial phase, the scope will expand to include essential social infrastructure such as schools and hospitals, alongside agricultural support through new irrigation projects. President Mahama indicated that fiscal adjustments have been implemented to create the necessary investment capacity, allowing the government to commit these substantial funds despite broader economic challenges.
In addition to the infrastructure drive, the President announced a complementary "New Economy" strategy. This parallel initiative seeks to mobilize another $10 billion directed toward nine specific sectors, including tourism and agriculture. By targeting these areas, the administration aims to diversify the economy and reduce its reliance on traditional exports, fostering a more inclusive environment for private sector growth and local employment.
During his address, President Mahama also addressed the systemic barriers facing African nations on the global stage. He criticized the international financial architecture for placing Africa at a disadvantage, particularly regarding access to climate financing. Highlighting a decline in Overseas Development Assistance (ODA), the President noted that while the region remains resilient, significant financial outflows continue to hamper progress. He called for a more equitable global system that recognizes the continent's investment potential and its role in the global economy.
