President John Mahama has provided a significant financial boost to three of Ghana's top football clubs as they prepare for their respective continental campaigns. During a meeting at the Jubilee House on September 8, 2026, the President presented a total of $60,000 to Medeama Sporting Club, Nations FC, and Ampem Darkoa Ladies. Medeama SC, representing the nation as Premier League champions, received $30,000, while FA Cup holders Nations FC were awarded $20,000. Ampem Darkoa Ladies, the prominent force in women's football, received $10,000. This financial package is intended to ease the logistical burdens of international competition and motivate the teams to restore Ghana's historical dominance on the African stage.
Beyond the financial support, President Mahama raised critical concerns regarding the 'talent drain' currently affecting the domestic league. He lamented the rapid exodus of young, promising footballers who are often sold to international clubs as soon as they show potential. The President argued that this trend is diminishing the quality of local football and urged club owners to adopt strategies to retain players longer. He suggested that integrating these talents into the national team more effectively would allow them to gain maturity and international experience at home, ultimately leading to more successful and sustainable careers abroad when they eventually transition.
In a passionate call for equity, the President also emphasized the need for greater investment in women’s football. He pointed out the irony that while Ghanaian women's teams have historically secured more trophies than their male counterparts, they continue to receive significantly less financial backing and attention. Mahama called for affirmative action to level the playing field, noting that the disparity must be addressed through deliberate policy and increased corporate sponsorship. He underscored that the success of Ampem Darkoa Ladies serves as a testament to the potential of the women's game if given the necessary resources.
Addressing the integrity of the sport, President Mahama further criticized the declining standards of refereeing in the domestic league, which he believes has eroded public confidence. He called for a collaborative effort between the Ghana Football Association and the Ghana Referees Association to improve officiating and ensure that matches are decided fairly on merit. To support the broader development of the industry, the President confirmed that the government is moving forward with plans to construct ten new stadiums across various regions and is operationalizing the Sports Development Fund. These initiatives aim to provide the infrastructure and financial framework required to rebrand Ghanaian football and support diverse disciplines, including athletics and boxing.
