Nigerian Security Forces Launch Massive Manhunt as National Kidnapping Crisis Nears $6 Million in Annual Ransoms

Nigerian security forces have launched a large-scale manhunt following a series of violent attacks and mass abductions in the north-western state of Niger. During Friday prayers, armed men raided mosques across four villages, abducting up to 600 individuals, including women and children. President Bola Tinubu has strongly condemned these acts of terror, affirming the government's commitment to defending its citizens as military, police, and intelligence agencies coordinate a complex rescue operation. This latest incident underscores a deteriorating security situation where mass kidnapping has become a dominant and devastating tactic across the region.

The scale of this crisis is further highlighted by a recent report from SBM Intelligence, which reveals that criminal groups and insurgent organizations in Nigeria collected nearly $6 million (7.78 billion naira) in ransom payments between July 2025 and June 2026. This figure represents a staggering increase from the 2.56 billion naira recorded the previous year. According to the Lagos-based consultancy, the number of abductees rose by 66% year-on-year, with a total of 7,825 people taken. Boko Haram remains a primary driver of this "kidnap-for-profit" industry, accounting for nearly 90% of ransom totals through high-profile mass abductions of civilians and students.

Beyond the statistics, the human cost is catastrophic, as survivors of similar raids in Zamfara state describe a terrifying level of coordination among attackers. One survivor, Fatima, recounted how gunmen surrounded her village at 2:00 AM, dividing into groups to block escape routes and setting fire to residences to flush out inhabitants. "If you started running, they shot you," she reported, highlighting the lethal nature of these encounters. The SBM report notes that at least 1,142 people were killed in abduction-related violence during the study period, including 895 civilians, illustrating that lethal force is frequently employed even when financial gain is the primary motive.

As Nigeria approaches its next general elections in January 2027, the government faces mounting pressure to disrupt the financial networks supporting these insurgencies and bandit groups. High-profile cases, such as the abduction of 400 people from Ngoshe and 300 pupils and staff from St. Mary’s Catholic School, have allegedly forced the government to pay billions in secret ransoms to secure releases, despite official policies against such payments. Security experts argue that without significant economic stabilization and more aggressive measures to track and block the movement of funds to jihadist groups, the cycle of violence and abduction is likely to persist as a major threat to national stability.
