Several passengers have sustained injuries following a motor accident on the Mallam Market stretch of the Odorkor Highway in Accra. The incident involved a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus, with registration number GW-9581-26, and a mini passenger bus, commonly known as a trotro. The collision resulted in significant damage to both vehicles and required the immediate evacuation of injured commuters to a nearby medical facility for urgent care.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the crash occurred when the mini trotro driver made an abrupt stop at an unauthorized location along the highway to pick up a prospective passenger. The Sprinter bus, which was travelling behind the trotro, was unable to maneuver out of the way in time and crashed heavily into the rear of the smaller vehicle. The force of the impact left both buses mangled, trapping some occupants and causing panic among onlookers and other road users on the busy stretch.
Bystanders and emergency responders assisted in rescuing the victims from the wreckage before they were transported to the hospital. While the exact number of casualties and the severity of their conditions have not been officially confirmed by medical authorities, the damage to the vehicles indicates a high-impact collision. This incident underscores ongoing concerns regarding road safety and the prevalence of commercial drivers making unauthorized stops on major highways, a practice that continues to pose significant risks to Ghanaian commuters.
