Rabiu Alhassan Joins International Fact-Checking Board as Major General Kotia Outlines New African Military Dynamics

Africa is witnessing a significant shift in its institutional leadership and security strategies, marked by the appointment of Ghanaian experts to international roles and the redefinition of military mandates across the continent. Rabiu Alhassan, the Founding Executive Director of FactSpace West Africa, has been elected to the board of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), becoming a key voice for the continent in the global fight against disinformation. Simultaneously, Major General Kotia has provided a high-level analysis of the evolving dynamics of the military’s role in African peace and security, advocating for a transition toward human security and integrated socio-economic development.

Alhassan’s election reflects a strong mandate from the international fact-checking community; he was the only candidate among six contenders to receive more than 50 percent support in the first round of voting. During his three-year term on the IFCN board, Alhassan aims to foster more equitable partnerships and address the urgent need for AI moderation tools tailored to local African languages. Since founding FactSpace West Africa in 2019, his work has been instrumental in combating disinformation across multiple West African nations. In his new capacity, he will participate in critical global decisions, including the review of member applications and renewals for the network.

Complementing this push for information integrity is a call for structural military reform. Major General Kotia’s recent analysis explores how African militaries are moving beyond traditional defense roles to include peace operations, cyber defense, and even socio-economic contributions. Utilizing theoretical frameworks such as Realism and Security Sector Reform, Kotia highlights the importance of adapting to contemporary threats like terrorism and civil unrest. The research underscores that enhancing military professionalism and accountability is not merely a matter of defense, but a prerequisite for sustainable peace and development on the continent.

These developments underscore a broader trend of African leaders and experts taking proactive roles in shaping the continent’s stability and narrative. Whether through the lens of military professionalism or the integrity of digital information, the focus remains on building resilient institutions. As Alhassan begins his tenure at the IFCN and military thinkers like Kotia push for modern security reforms, the synergy between information transparency and physical security becomes increasingly vital. Both efforts signify a move toward a more stable Africa, equipped to handle the complex challenges of the 21st century through local expertise and global collaboration.
