The Greater Accra Regional Hospital, popularly known as Ridge Hospital, has expanded its operations by opening its medical oxygen plant to external customers. This initiative allows the hospital to supply medical-grade oxygen to other health facilities and individuals, moving beyond its previous policy of reserving production strictly for internal clinical use. The move is designed to improve regional access to the life-saving gas and ensure a more reliable supply chain for healthcare delivery across the Greater Accra Region.
The hospital’s oxygen production system works by compressing atmospheric air and filtering it to remove moisture and impurities, ensuring the final product meets high clinical standards. Once processed, the oxygen is distributed through a dedicated pipeline network or made available for purchase by external buyers. This technical capacity has been bolstered to create a surplus, allowing the facility to serve as a critical supplier for smaller clinics and private medical needs that often face shortages.
Juliana Haruna, the Head of Public Relations at the hospital, stated that the decision to open the plant to external buyers is a strategic effort to enhance overall healthcare delivery. By leveraging its infrastructure to support the broader medical community, the hospital aims to stabilize the availability of medical oxygen. Previously, the facility focused solely on its own patient load, but the current expansion of the production system has made this commercial outreach possible.
This development marks a significant shift in the operational model of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, positioning it as a central hub for medical infrastructure. As demand for medical oxygen continues to fluctuate in the country, the availability of a steady supply from a major public institution is expected to reduce dependence on private vendors. This transition highlights a growing trend of public health facilities utilizing their industrial capacity to benefit the wider national health system.
