Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, has revealed that Ghana recorded 3,876 cybersecurity incidents between January and July 2026. Speaking at the launch of the 2026 National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Sukparu highlighted the growing threats facing the country’s digital landscape, particularly within the financial sector. The event, themed "Securing Ghana’s Digital Financial Ecosystem: Building Trust, Collaboration and Cyber Resilience," serves as a call to action for stakeholders to address vulnerabilities inherent in the nation's increasing digital reliance.
Data released during the launch indicates that online fraud remains the most significant threat, accounting for 47% of all reported cases during the seven-month period. This trend underscores a persistent challenge as more Ghanaians transition to digital platforms for banking, commerce, and social interaction. The Deputy Minister noted that the volume of incidents reflects both the increasing sophistication of cybercriminals and the expanding digital footprint of the Ghanaian populace, necessitating a more robust and proactive national defense strategy.
Sukparu emphasized that building cyber resilience requires a multi-stakeholder approach involving government agencies, private sector players, and the general public. He urged for enhanced collaboration to share intelligence and develop unified responses to emerging threats. The 2026 awareness campaign is specifically designed to foster this cooperation while educating the public on various forms of cyber-attacks and the best practices for mitigating risks across the digital ecosystem.
In his concluding remarks, the Deputy Minister stressed that digital literacy is a primary line of defense for the individual. Citizens were encouraged to take personal responsibility for their digital safety by regularly updating online credentials and remaining vigilant against phishing and other fraudulent schemes. Sukparu also called on the public to report suspicious activities to the relevant authorities promptly, ensuring that law enforcement and technical teams can respond effectively to protect the integrity of the nation's financial infrastructure.
