Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has moved to deepen its regional partnership with Burkina Faso’s national oil company, Sonabhy, to streamline the movement and trading of petroleum products. The initiative, led by TOR’s Managing Director Edmond Kombat, seeks to build upon the existing energy relationship where Ghana already provides approximately 40% of Burkina Faso’s total petroleum requirements. This strategic collaboration is expected to enhance energy security and economic cooperation between the two West African nations. During a recent high-level management visit to Burkina Faso, the TOR delegation engaged with their counterparts at Sonabhy to discuss logistical improvements and trade expansion. Mr. Kombat emphasized the importance of maintaining a reliable supply chain to meet the growing energy demands of the landlocked neighbor. The discussions focused on optimizing the cross-border transport of refined products, ensuring that the infrastructure supporting this trade remains efficient and resilient against regional market fluctuations. The management of TOR expressed appreciation for the support provided by the Ghanaian government, specifically highlighting the roles of President John Mahama and the Minister of Energy, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor. Their involvement has been instrumental in facilitating the bilateral agreements that govern petroleum exports. By leveraging this political backing, TOR aims to secure its position as a primary energy hub in the sub-region, further integrating the economies of Ghana and Burkina Faso through shared infrastructure and resources. Moving forward, the strengthened ties between TOR and Sonabhy are likely to result in increased volumes of petroleum products moving through the corridor. This partnership not only secures a steady market for Ghana's refinery outputs but also stabilizes Burkina Faso's energy sector. As both organizations work to refine their trading protocols, the collaboration serves as a model for regional energy integration under the broader goals of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
