Zamse Senior High School (SHS) in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region has made an urgent appeal to the government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and private individuals to help address a critical furniture shortage. The deficit currently affects more than 2,600 students, significantly hampering their academic concentration and forcing the school to implement temporary measures to manage the lack of seating.
The furniture crisis has reached a point where the school management has been forced to adopt a shift system specifically for conducting examinations. This arrangement is necessary because the school lacks enough desks and chairs to accommodate all students simultaneously during test periods. Beyond examinations, the daily learning environment is compromised, as many students struggle to find comfortable seating during regular lessons, which management warns is detrimental to effective teaching and learning.
The appeal for assistance was highlighted during the school’s Golden Jubilee celebration, an event intended to mark 50 years of academic contribution but which also served to draw attention to the institution's pressing infrastructural needs. Both students and school management used the platform to express their concerns, noting that the lack of adequate resources creates an environment that is not conducive to high-level academic performance. They emphasized that without immediate intervention, the quality of education at the institution could continue to decline.
Management further stressed that the provision of desks and chairs is essential for restoring a sense of normalcy and improving the overall academic atmosphere at Zamse SHS. As the school population continues to grow, the demand for basic educational infrastructure has outpaced the available supply. The school community remains hopeful that the government and benevolent organizations will respond to their plea to ensure that students can focus on their studies without the physical burden of inadequate seating.
